What’s Involved (colonics)
Be Prepared
Prepare your schedule and home for your two-week cleansing program. Start on a weekend so that you may have time to stock up on the foods that you need. Try to start during a time when you do not have too many social engagements. Please do not cleanse if you are going through any major emotional upheaval in your life like moving house as you may find it too difficult to focus on the program. On the other hand, some people find that they make the best changes in their lives at this time and are more focussed on themselves. Listen to your body and find a time that is right for you to start the program.
Download my cleansing program dietary information sheet this information sheet explains in detail how to prepare for your course of colonic irrigation treatments by making some simple dietary changes.
Please also read the colonic irrigation contraindication list; if you have any of the contraindications listed unfortunately we will not be able to treat you at this time. If in doubt please feel free to ask us or consult with your doctor before booking your first treatment.
The Consultation
The first appointment includes a 30 minute consultation where I take your medical history and daily dietary habits. At this point natural supplements will be recommended based on your individual needs and symptoms.
Please note, if you are taking medication please always seek the advice of your doctor before embarking on a cleansing program.
The Treatment
Before the treatment begins, a brief rectal exam is carried out. If there is no bleeding or inflammation in the bowel then a lubricated plastic tube called a speculum is introduced into the rectum. This tube is tapered at the end and about the width of a thumb at its widest point. Although the sensation is odd (some say it is like pooing backwards), it is not painful. The speculum is smooth and shaped to fit comfortably in the rectum.
Single use sterilized plastic tubing, which comes from a sealed bag, is used for the treatment.
A small water inlet and a larger waste outlet tube are attached to the outside of the speculum. Water gently flows into the bowel through the water inlet tube and waste is piped directly away into the machine through the water outlet, so you are not exposed to any waste during the treatment.
The machine is not a vacuum system. Waste from the machine drops into a sewage pipe using gravity only, just like a toilet. This is why the treatment feels natural and gentle.
As the water flows into the bowel, it softens old matter and triggers peristalsis by causing a gentle pressure on the bowel wall. Massage is used during the treatment to help dislodge old matter or wind and to help move the water around the bowel.
I watch the pressure in the bowel during the treatment. The total capacity of the bowel is 5 litres, between 1/4 litre and 1 litre of water enters the bowel at a time and is released upon a pressure rise which indicates that peristalsis has begun. To you this pressure will feel like an urge to have a bowel motion, which passes once your bowel releases the water.
The treatment lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
After care
After your first colonic I recommend that you take the time to relax and unwind. Wait for at least an hour to eat a light meal. All the foods from the NO list of my cleansing program dietary information sheet should be avoided after a colonic. Drink at least a litre of water to flush out the remaining toxins from your body that may have been disturbed during your colonic treatment, thus reducing the risk of toxic headache.
Most people feel lighter and better after a colonic, however it is also common to feel tired and/or gassy after a treatment. If this happens, listen to your body and take it easy for the night drink lots of warm herbal teas, eat a mild vegetable broth, rest and apply a warm heating pad to the abdomen. Any discomfort will pass within 24 hours.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or queries after your first treatment.
