Contraindications (Food Intolerance)

Please wait at least 5 days after finishing a course of antibiotics before having your food intolerance test.

Food Intolerance Symptoms In Detail

Migraine Headaches

It is common to hear that certain foods trigger migraines – for example, aged cheese, chocolate and red wine are often implicated. Dr. Anthony Ferro in Palm beach who has successfully treated many patients with migraine notes that some of his clients had very unusual trigger foods such as lamb, wheat or milk. The individual reaction can occur to just about any food that is commonly eaten. Dr. Barbara Solomon in Baltimore who uses food intolerance testing to help treat patients with migraine headaches, conducted a study on 71 patients with headaches. Dr. Solomon found that 82% cleared their migraines after eliminating foods to which they were reactive.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the intestines. It causes belly pain, cramping or bloating, and diarrhoea or constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome is a long-term problem, but there are things you can do to reduce your symptoms. Doctors do not know exactly what causes irritable bowel syndrome. In IBS, the movement of the digestive tract does not work as it should, but there is no sign of changes in the intestines, such as inflammation or tumours. As a colon hydrotherapist I have seen a link between food and IBS, after all what do you put into your bowel every day but food? I have noticed that the trigger foods are most commonly wheat, dairy, alcohol, fruit and coffee however any food that is commonly eaten may cause an inflammatory response. If you have tried eliminating the above foods from your diet and still have digestive discomfort it might be time to take our food intolerance blood test.

Chronic Fatigue

Fatigue is a common feature of many diseases and illnesses. Evidence implicates food intolerance as a cause of fatigue and may be an “early warning sign” of food intolerance. Dr. Paul Jaconello, an nutritional and preventative medicine specialist from Canada, believes food is a fundamental part in the treatment of chronic fatigue and has seen many of his patients cured of fatigue by eliminating foods to which they showed an intolerance. Many people experience fatigue after they have exerted a great deal of energy. However, if their tiredness is not related to any particular exertion on their part, is unrelieved by rest or sleep and is frequency worse in the morning, many health practitioners believe it is probably associated in some way with food and/or chemical sensitivities.

Asthma and other respiratory problems

There is no feeling more terrifying than running out of oxygen. Allergic airway disease may be due to food intolerance as well as airborne allergens. Airway problems such as asthma, hay fever and sinusitis can all be helped by eliminating the individuals reactive foods. Food intolerance’s elicit an inflammatory response and put an extra load on the system, the air passages are a likely target for a system weakened by airborne allergens.

Eczema and other skin disorders

Traditional medicine recognizes food allergy as the link between an immediate skin rash and is beginning to link food intolerances to delayed inflammatory skin reactions. There is growing evidence that what goes into the mouth can produce a reaction on the skin. Millions of people suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, urticaria, angio-edema and severe acne. Much suffering due to these puzzling conditions could be prevented through the elimination of reactive foods. Even cellulite, the scourge of women everywhere, is closely associated with food intolerance.

Weight Gain

Modern advances in weight loss are now showing that overeating is linked to a biochemical reaction in the body in response to eating an allergenic food. One study reported by Dr. Colin Little in “Food Allergy and Intolerance”, showed that eating an allergenic food often lowers the blood levels of serotonin. Lower levels of serotonin make you feel uncomfortable and you turn to simple sugars and carbohydrates for relief. According to Dr. Rudy Rivera, author of “Your Hidden Food Allergies are Making You Fat”, research shows people who stop eating foods to which they are intolerant find among other things their “craving for sweets” is diminished.

In another controlled study from Baylor Medical College reported 98% success for weight loss and/or improvement in body composition from patients that followed the recommended elimination diet, an unparalleled achievement (Katts, Pullen and Parker -1996).

Infertility

Infertility is on the rise, science has come up with a number of explanations for this, most of them involving a chronic activation of the immune system. When the immune system is activated the body determines that this is not a good time to become pregnant. Dr. Lne Hoj, an allergy specialist from Copenhagen has seen about 50 female patients become pregnant after eliminating their reactive foods. Some of those patients had been infertile for as long as eight years. Dr. Hoj believes that inflammation caused by the immune system response to food intolerance caused a swelling of the mucosal lining of the fallopian tubes, preventing the ovum’s movement to the uterus. She has also tested males and observed improvement in sperm counts, motility and morphology following specific food elimination.

Heart Disease

It has been cited that about 50% of heart attack patients have normal cholesterol. So what could be the underlying cause of heart attack in these cases? In the November 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Stanley Hazan reported in a study of 333 heart patients. He made the remarkable discovery that blood levels of inflammatory chemicals released by white blood cells were a far better predictor of heart attack than were cholesterol levels. He found, that in patients with the highest levels of these chemicals had 20 times greater risk of heard disease than did subjects with the lowest levels. The evidence is quite compelling that immune system activation is a major, probably the major cause of cardiovascular disea
